Sitting inside, the similarities between this car and the Porsche of yesteryear end at the Porsche crest on the steering wheel and that familiar little analogue clock atop the dashboard. The Taycan is the marques first foray into fully digital instrumentation, and given its electric powertrain and spaceship-like sounds it seems befitting that the interior also looks like something from a far away future.
Porsche have cleverly integrated 5 digital displays inside. Directly in front of the drive sits a curved, free-standing 16.8-inch configurable display. A 10.9-inch screen to the right of the instrument cluster is the car’s infotainment center, beneath on the centre console sits an 8.4-inch portrait-oriented, touchpad-controlled screen showing the powertrain’s status and advises the driver on using the car’s power efficiently. Passengers are also presented with digital displays to interact with – an optional screen to the right of the infotainment screen allows the front passenger to customise the infotainment system and another small screen can be found in the back for rear passengers to control temperatures.
On the outside of this feat of technology designer Mitja Borkert created an aesthetic intentionally distinct from the rest of the marks lineup, yet a few touches are unmistakably Porsche – notable the short-nosed front proportions with the stretched proportions of modern front-engine models towards the rear. Other design features of note are the retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, four-point LED daytime running headlamps, full-width light band serving as taillights and turn signals.
The vehicle is equipped with a new battery-electric all-wheel-drive drivetrain with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor on each axle. At the front, power is sent to the wheels through a single-speed gearbox, and at the rear, through a two-speed transmission and a limited slip differential. The Porsche-developed 800-volt charging system takes the battery from 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes in ideal situations, using a DC fast charger with 270 kW of power.
To counteract additional weight of the powertrain the Taycan is an impressive 37% aluminium, including shock absorber mounts, axle mounts and rear side members, and all body panels, except the front and rear bumpers, are also made from aluminum to reduce weight.
