Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Automatic
1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Automatic Cabriolet, model W111 with M116 V8 engine, 200hp. Finished in dark green with Cognac leather interior. Chassis number 11102712001022, first registered in Sweden in 1991, the odometer shows 67275 km. The car has undergone a full and thorough restoration, details of which can be provided on request.
Produced between 1961 and 1971, this beautifully presented cabriolet oozes elegance and class in an understated manner typical for Mercedes-Benz of this era, a testament to designer Paul Bracq’s penmanship. Being the rarer and highly collectible 3.5 it was the last of the true coach-built cars from the manufacturer, doors closing with a reassuring clunk communicating the quality and craftsmanship that is clear throughout the car on closer inspection. There are of course just two of these doors also, creating long, clean lines down the side panels with little interruption.
The Cognac leather interior is a pleasure to behold and befitting for a car of this era, and the colour continues across all tactile areas of the cockpit down to the carpets. The seats themselves have perforated centre sections, another nice design detail, the roof is high and the cabin light and airy to sit in. A solid burled wood dashboard sits before the driver, and this wood continues up the A pillars, an interesting feature. Opening the glove box reveals this is definitely no facade; it’s cut from a solid piece of the stuff. In the dash sits a classic Becker Europa three-band radio which is a thing of beauty in itself - this one appears to have an auxiliary 3.5mm cable wired in so you can connect new age sounds to this 50yr old masterpiece. Beneath it sits a BEHR air conditioning unit with two simple control dials.
This top of the line model is equipped with the M116 3.5L V8 producing 200 bhp, the speedo will see 60mph in brisk 12 seconds and go onto a top speed of 130mph - it makes for a great highway cruiser and grand tourer.
